Living the Song: Zeget’s Gift to Akinyi

Living the Song: Zeget’s Gift to Akinyi

Great stories choose their writers, so it's said. And the best writers are those who live their story, tell it as bards, turning their deeds into a legacy.

And I like my stories accompanied with strings, a little brass in the cascading blues belted, so I think. And since the last show I attended of Zeget Delongeur, I can’t wait for the album launch at Emara Ole Sereni, on the 27th June.

The keystrokes had been delicate, the drum set a sweet jitter at the slightest strike, and the refraining pluck of strings as Zeget sang his heart out to Akinyi, soulful.

My eyes were misty, ‘from the smoldering butt in the tray’, my head was swaying, and my legs tapping to the steps of the dancers on the stage beside him. It was Rhumba night at Salt and Pepper, Kilimani, and I was spellbound.

“Hey, what are you thinking?” She’d asked, rolling to my side.

“I’m thinking….” But was I really thinking, or contemplating?

“What?” she probed.

“I’m thinking about the last show we went to,” I whispered. It was 3 oclock in the morning.

“Is that why you’re awake?” the snigger.

“I’m still slightly hungover from the show.”

“Are you mourning after it?”

“Mourning won’t last forever, for the weekend is just a breath away.”
