Actors’ Day Out: Building a Healthier Kenyan Film Community

If you missed the recent Actors’ Day Out, don’t worry, there’s more to come from Graysen Kilonzo and the Kijivuland team.

Walking into the lush Lost Woods that afternoon, the energy was electric. Actors belted out songs (some intentionally off-key), played group games, laughed freely, and engaged in everything from mime performances to lively Q&As with a live band providing the soundtrack.

The goal? To foster a healthier film community.

“The film world is notorious for burnout, toxic set environments, and intense, unregulated competition,” says Graysen Kilonzo, Communications and PR specialist. “At Kijivuland, we believe a thriving industry is built on strong relationships, not just time spent on set.”

Stepping back from the director’s chair, Graysen took on the role of ecosystem builder, bringing together more than 100 actors, creatives, and revelers. His vision is clear: prioritize creative wellbeing and shift the culture from cutthroat competition to genuine collaboration.

“At Kijivuland, we bring veterans and rising stars into the same room, ensuring the Kenyan film scene grows as a supportive collective rather than a fractured group of individuals,” he adds.

The day served as a much-needed safe space for heavy storytelling. Because Kijivuland often tackles sensitive advocacy topics, such as femicide and disability awareness, having a healthy, empathetic cast and crew is essential.

“You cannot sustainably tell stories about societal trauma if the people telling them are not supported,” Graysen explains.
